It's a digital world

I see screens of words, e-tablets too
I see them glow for me and you
And I think to myself:
"What a digital world!"

I see reams of code and clouds of bits
The hive mind at work, turning books into shit
And I think to myself:
"What a digital world!"

The colors of the touch-screen so pretty in the palm
Are glowing in the glasses of readers turning on
I see friends friending friends, texting "How do you do?"
They really mean: "Who are you?"

I hear publishers crying, I feel their pain
They'll lose much more than we'll ever gain
And I think to myself:
"What a digital world!"
Yes, I think to myself:
"What a digital world!"

(With apologies to Bob Thiele and George Weiss, who wrote "It's a Wonderful World" and deep apologies to the memory of Louis Armstrong, one of America's great artists, whose rendition of this tune always makes me smile. Sentimental fool.)
